This interactive course is designed to help the dental health care provider in gaining awareness of use of appropriate opioid and non-opioid analgesics for managing acute and chronic dental pain. Case vignettes will be presented to describe appropriate analgesic use, risk assessment, safe prescribing practices, patient education, and awareness of the opioid crisis in the United States. Participants will gain knowledge of ADA recommendations and best practice guidelines for managing dental pain.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop an awareness of misconceptions and consequences of untreated pain.
  • Recognize different types of pain and identify appropriate analgesics for each type.
  • Discuss the pharmacology of analgesic medications.
  • Describe opioids for pain management.
  • Discuss CDC and ADA guidelines for opioid use.

This course counts toward the Michigan Board of Dentistry’s pain management requirement and the training requirement to obtain or renew the controlled substance pharmacy license for dentists.

The course will allow dental health care providers to be current with infection prevention and control protocols and guidelines in the dental practice. Attendees will receive information on how to maintain a safe workplace environment and implement appropriate infection control measures in the dental practice. Attendees also will gain understanding of common transmissible and infectious diseases and insight into appropriate immunizations to prevent infectious disease.

Learning objectives:

  • Be current with infection prevention recommendations by CDC and OSHA.
  • Implement effective infection control measures in the practice.
  • Choose appropriate personal protective equipment and maintain a safe workplace environment.
  • Understand current vaccination recommendations for providers.
  • Understand current infectious diseases that may impact the dental practice.

Complexity of Drugs and the Dental Practice

The pharmacological complexity of drugs that dental patients present with is overwhelming. Add to this drugs prescribed in the dental office and drugs that the patient may be using off label, and it becomes a recipe for disaster!

This course will utilize case vignettes to describe various drugs that dental patients may be using during the time of their dental visit, including analgesics, antibiotics, hormonal supplements, anticoagulants, antiplatelets, CNS stimulants and depressants, as well as controlled substances. Drug interactions, adverse effects, and potential drug-related threats during the dental visit will be emphasized, followed by a quick discussion on best practice for patient management in such scenarios.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify and discuss complex and hazardous medications that dental patients may be taking.
  • Identify drug interactions with drugs prescribed in the dental office.
  • Identify dental implications and severe adverse effects of complex drugs.
  • List drugs that may pose a threat for the dental patient while undergoing a dental procedure.
  • Discuss best practice guidelines to manage these adverse effects in the dental office.

About the Speaker … Dr. Sanjay Chand has specialized in medicine with emphasis on clinical therapeutics, pain management and infection control. He is clinical professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and is director of infection control, overseeing best practices, infection control policies, and their implementation at the school.

Rates are for room only, per room, per day and are subject to a 6% state tax, 9% service fee and 2% local assessment. Special room rates are only applicable for those who register for the MDA Winter Scientific Session. A deposit equal to the first night’s lodging on one-night stays or 50% of two-night stays is required. Deposit is refundable, less a $10 administrative fee, if cancelation or modification is made at least 14 days prior to arrival date. Deposit is forfeited and non-refundable if canceled less than 14 days prior. Children 17 and under stay free when sharing accommodations with guardians.

Reservations must be made by Dec. 10, 2025, to receive the MDA rate. Attendees must stay Friday and Saturday nights.

Crystal Mountain will provide all registered lodging guests affiliated with the MDA Winter Scientific Session complimentary skiing on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

MDA Cancellation Refund Policy

Cancellations must be made at least five business days prior to the event to be eligible for a refund, minus a $50 administrative fee. Cancellations made less than five business days before the event are non-refundable.
