Opioid Awareness Training for the Dental Team

This course is designed to assist the dental health care provider in gaining awareness of use of appropriate opioid analgesics for managing acute and chronic dental pain. Case based scenarios will be presented to help establish appropriate analgesic use, risk assessment, safe prescribing practices, patient education and awareness of the opioid crisis in the United States. Participants will gain knowledge of ADA recommendations and best practice guidelines for prescribing Opioids for dental pain.
Learning objectives:
- Discuss Opioid Use Disorder, overdose deaths and misuse of prescription opioids.
- Describe safe and competent use of opioids for managing moderate and severe dental pain.
- Identify and educate patients at high-risk of Opioid Use Disorder and opioid overdose.
- Describe serious drug interactions of opioids with other controlled substances.
- Discuss ADA recommendations for safe opioid prescribing in the Dental practice.
This course counts toward Michigan Board of Dentistry’s pain management requirement and the training requirement to obtain or renew the controlled substance pharmacy license for dentists.
About the speaker … Dr. Sanjay Chand has specialized in medicine with emphasis on clinical therapeutics, pain management and infection control. He is clinical professor at the University of Detroit Mercy’s School of Dentistry and is director of infection control, overseeing best practices, infection control policies, and their implementation at the school. Dr. Chand is a popular speaker at many continuing education seminars at national and international conferences. His area of expertise includes infection control, pain management, opioid use disorders, and chronic disease management in the dental patient. He has been presented for the Michigan Dental Association, Michigan Dental Hygienists Association, and the Association for Dental Safety (formerly named the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention).
