The course will cover the delegation and supervision of procedures by dentists to dental assistants and hygienists, highlighting recent changes to the Michigan Administrative Code Rules regarding which procedures may be delegated to a registered dental assistant. Also covered will be ethical requirements related to proper delegation and supervision of procedures to dental assistants and hygienists.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding what procedures are legal to delegate to dental assistants and hygienists.
  • Understanding what level of supervision is required when a procedure is delegated.
  • Understanding the difference between the legal and ethical requirements applicable to delegation and supervision.

This course counts toward Michigan’s ethics, jurisprudence, and delegation of duties requirement.

About the speakers … Dan Schulte is well-known for his knowledge and experience in the area of association law and is primarily responsible for the firm’s representation of the Michigan Dental Association, Michigan State Medical Society, and the Michigan Osteopathic Association. His work related to association law includes the drafting and review of new legislation and the preparation of Amicus Curiae Briefs for filing in Michigan’s Supreme Court and Court of Appeals on a variety of topics affecting health care professionals practicing in Michigan.

Dr. Michael Maihofer is a former editor and president of the Michigan Dental Association, and a past chair of the MDA Committee on Peer Review/Ethics. He represented the ADA 9th District (Michigan and Wisconsin) as a member of the American Dental Association Council on Communications and is a former president of the American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists. Dr. Maihofer is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, and a Fellow of the Michigan Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He authored of the well-known “Peer Review/Ethics” column in the MDA Journal as well as a compendium of those columns, Most-Asked Ethics Questions, published in 2019.
